Make sure you get a Purchase Order from KWHB before you depart

Before departing for your destination, check that a Purchase Order has been raised by KWHB and received by your organisation.

Make contact upon arrival

If you are working in Katherine or one of our communities, you must make contact with our local teams upon arrival as a matter of priority.

These contacts will provide information about the community and expectations for your work and stay and can provide resources if required.

Staying in KWHB Accommodation

If you are staying in KWHB provided accommodation, please ensure that:

You protect and look after KWHB equipment, facilities and resources.
You are mindful not to waste KWHB resources, including power and water.
You ensure that accommodation is left in the same condition as it is found.
You maintain high personal standards while staying in KWHB accommodation, including respect for neighbours and local community.

If you have any problems with your accommodation, please speak to your local KWHB contact.

Taking photos and posting on social media

We discourage external contractors from taking photos or posting photos or videos to social media accounts while working in KWHB communities.

If you are required to take photos as part of your contract work with KWHB, please keep in mind that the KWHB Board of Directors ask staff and contractors to keep the taking of photo/video images in our communities to a minimum. It is best to check in with a local member of the community or health professional who will be able to advise you if there are any concerns with the images you are taking. Concerns may include community members not providing informed consent, or sacred sites not permitted to be photographed.
If you are taking a photo on a work site, try to ensure there are no people in the photo.

Please be mindful that once images or videos are posted online, it is difficult to fully remove them and they may be shared or saved by third parties.

Please respect the wishes of community members at all times when it comes to taking photo/video images.

Cultural awareness and communication

When working in remote Katherine West region, it is important to be mindful of how you speak and interact with members of the local community.

This fact sheet from Queensland Health provides basic information about communicating effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Here are some steps you can take to avoid misunderstandings while out in communities.

On arrival, speak to a local Aboriginal Health Practitioner to better understand how to communicate with local community members in a positive and effective way.
If possible, have a member of the local community come with you to explain to others who you are and what you are doing.
Be respectful and introduce yourself.
Use plain English and avoid using technical terms.
People may say ‘yes’ to end the conversation or to avoid an uncomfortable situation. Take the time to ask again, or respectfully ask why they agree with you and wait for their answer.
Be mindful that time is perceived differently in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, so be flexible in meeting someone or getting access somewhere at a certain time.
Remember that avoidance of eye contact and extended periods of silence are fine.
