Teaming up to yarn about homelessness

Quitaysha Thompson, representing Kalkaringi Ngaliwany Purrp’ku Child and Family Centre and Sinon Cooney, KWHB CEO recently presented at the National Housing and Homelessness Forum in Darwin on 16-19 May.

The presentation showed the strength of regional services teaming up to bring national attention to vital issues affecting health and wellbeing.

Quitaysha and Sinon spoke strongly about housing design in remote Aboriginal communities and how overcrowding impacts long-term health and wellbeing. They advocated for community voices to be heard when designing remote housing, and the critical need to address overcrowding.

They also spoke about the recent Kalkaringi floods, where 700 community members across Kalkaringi, Daguragu and Nitjpurru became instantly homeless. Three months later, many community members remain displaced from their home communities and houses as maintenance crews work to make the flooded infrastructure safe for returning residents.
