Katherine West Health Board is governed by an 18-member Board consisting of Aboriginal representatives who are elected by their communities in the KWHB region.
The role of the Board is to represent the interests of community members and provide direction to KWHB staff. The structure of the Katherine West Health Board is based on the philosophy of Aboriginal community control. The Board meets four times per year and has a six-member Executive that meets regularly.
In addition to full Board meetings and Executive Board meetings, KWHB members display extraordinary commitment by:
- Participating in governance training (provided by an external consultant) about roles and responsibilities
- Attending open meetings in each community.
- Providing cultural safety by partnering the CEO at a wide range of other meetings.
Other meetings are attended where presentations are often made by Board members, including:
- Open community meetings in Lajamanu, Kalkaringi, Daguragu, Yarralin, Nijpurru, Gilwi, Myatt and Bulla
- ‘Money Story’ and governance training in Katherine
- Cultural Orientation Projects consultative meeting, Katherine
- Healthy for Life Conferences
- Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance – Northern Territory (AMSANT) meetings
- Provision of information about the KWHB coordinated-care model experience to interested professional corporations
- KWHB Risk Assessments, usually conducted by the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH), Katherine.
